Jewellery safety tips: buy, wear, store & travel smart

Most jewellery losses aren't dramatic heists — they're preventable mistakes: buying a fake, flashing a chain in the wrong place, storing everything in the obvious drawer. Here's the practical version.

1. Buy smart — avoid fakes and regrets

Check for purity stamps (10k, 14k, 18k, 22k, 24k) and maker's marks, but know that stamps can be faked — plated pieces get stamped too. For anything expensive, buy from sellers who'll let you verify with an XRF test, or bring the piece to someone who can test it before money changes hands. A receipt with the karat and weight written on it protects you later.

2. Wear discreetly — reduce theft risk

Chain snatching targets visible gold. Tuck chains under clothing in transit, skip the full set on the subway, and be aware of your surroundings when leaving a jewellery store or buyer — that's when you're most predictable. Save the statement pieces for controlled settings.

3. Store securely at home

The jewellery box on the dresser is the first place anyone looks. Split your collection: everyday pieces accessible, valuable pieces in a bolted-down safe or an unexpected location. Photograph everything with weights and receipts — it makes insurance claims and police reports actually work.

4. Travel like a pro

Carry-on only, never checked luggage. Use a padded case so pieces don't scratch each other, keep it with you rather than in a hotel room, and consider whether the piece needs to make the trip at all. If it would ruin the vacation to lose it, it probably stays home.
